Working smoke alarms significantly increase your chance of surviving a deadly home fire. A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the only thing in your home that can alert you and your family to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether you're awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert scanning the air for fire and smoke.

In addition to changing your smoke alarm batteries this weekend, the USFA recommends following these simple steps to protect your life, your loved ones, and your home:

Dust or vacuum smoke alarms when you change the batteries.

Test alarms once a month using the test button.

Replace the entire alarm if it's more than 10 years old or doesn't work properly when tested.

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement, and both inside and outside of sleeping areas.

For the best protection, equip your home with a combination of ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms or dual sensor alarms.

Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout your home so that when one sounds, they all sound. Interconnected alarms are available at most stores that sell smoke alarms.

Make sure everyone in your home understands the warning of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond.

Finally, prepare and practice an escape plan so that you and your loved ones can get out of your home safely should there be a fire. Plan to meet in a place a safe distance from the fire and where first responders can easily see you.

For more information on smoke alarms, fire escape planning, and fire prevention, visit the USFA website at www.usfa.fema.gov/smokealarms.

Aube, CPCU, CIC, AAI, owner of Aube-McInnes Insurance Agency, Inc., announced his retirement after serving his insurance customers for over forty years. On September 1, 2010, Mark J. Cote, CIC,FIC, owner of Advantage Insurance Services Inc. and Weber Insurance Agency of Farmington, LLC will take over as the new owner.

Aube-McInnes Insurance Agency Inc. was founded by Harold McInnes in 1912, making it the oldest agency in the Rumford area, according to a special edition of the Rumford Falls Times dated June 10, 1948. It has been in operation at 160 Congress Street since 1960.

As a young boy, Aube polished the floors of the agency for his father, who was then the owner. His mother also worked there as a book keeper. He began his actual insurance career in 1970 and eventually bought the business. He attained many prestigious designations including CPCU, CIC, and AAI.

Cote became an agent for MetLife in 1991. In 1995, as an independent agent, he became the first member of the Weber Insurance Group and opened Advantage Insurance Services, which is located at 144 Congress Street in Rumford. In 2006, he went on to purchase the Farmington and Kingfield offices of Weber Insurance. He is also an owner of Weber Insurance Group, LLC, with 17 locations and growing.

“I want a local independent agent who I am able to trust handling my customers.” stated Aube. “After being in the insurance business this long, my customers became my friends. I also wanted someone who would take good care of my employees, Paula and Kelly.” Aube assured, “I expect a seamless transition. I will continue working for a few months, and even when I’m fully retired, I will be available to speak to my customers any time.”

Cote added, “It was a natural transition to purchase the agency from Mike. We have similar philosophies. Between the companies he was able to offer, and the ones we have, we can find coverage for just about anything. Mike has been a great competitor over the years. He is honest, and he really cares about his customers. It will be hard to fill his shoes, but I promised him I’d do my best. I wish Mike a long, wonderful retirement. He certainly deserves it.”

Over the next month or two, the computer system will be upgraded and the building will be reorganized to make room for the current Advantage Insurance staff to join Paula and Kelly, making the total number of employees six.
